A Chance Encounter with a Bass Flute Master

A Chance Encounter with a Bass Flute Master

Carolyn NorthStrauss

Before traveling to India in 1968, I discovered a recording by an Indian bass flutist named Pannalal Ghosh. Determined to study with him, I tried to find him once I arrived, only to be told that neither the musician nor the bass bamboo flute existed. Months later, while wandering through Old Delhi, I heard the unmistakable sound of a bass bamboo flute nearby. Following the music, I stumbled upon a small gathering in a patio where a young master of the instrument was performing at a private party.

I snuck in to listen, captivated by his skill. After his performance, I approached him, shared my story, and that meeting marked the beginning of a lifelong friendship. This young flutist not only became my teacher but also a cherished member of our family.

He confided his dream of performing in America, but I had no idea how to help. Two years later, back home, inspiration struck. I called a local listener-supported radio station and asked if they could air a reel-to-reel recording I had made of him in India. By chance, they had an opening that day. I introduced his music to the audience and shared that he was seeking an opportunity to perform in America, leaving my phone number for interested listeners.

When I returned home, the phone was ringing. A member of the local College of Indian Music had heard the broadcast and was looking for a teacher of North Indian bass flute. Two weeks later, my friend arrived in San Francisco, launching an illustrious international career. For over 50 years, his family lived nearby, becoming part of our own until his passing.

(That was G.S. Sachdev—his recordings are still widely available.)
