Wowduh: The Practical Magic of Synchronicity

Synchronicity was cute when it was simply noticing 11:11 on the clock every now and then. I took it as nothing more than the Universe showing off a little party trick.

As my spiritual practice deepened, though, the interconnectedness of everything became more apparent. Synchronicity became a way for the Universe to communicate that it was infinitely intelligent, not separate from me, and also directly aware of me. The synchronicities became highly precise and rich with meaning.

I became bombarded with odd coincidences at every turn. I was beautifully haunted by symbology, numbers, and lyrics. Multiple synchronicities wove together like thick plot lines in a movie. A synchronicity vortex pulled others into bewildering chains of events with me. It felt as if the Universe was beckoning me to come and play along. Wow! I whispered, over and over. It was overwhelming, but I welcomed the challenge to try and grasp it all.

I contemplated with courage. Clearly, something far more intelligent than I was orchestrating these peculiar events. I couldn’t pull off such feats, even if I had a billion dollar budget. And yet it seemed like the Universe was managing effortlessly, like magic. I came to understand that synchronicity was the rule, not the exception. Everything has always been interconnected and nothing is random. I had just been too caught up in the illusion of separation to notice.

Over time, my initial feelings of shock began to mature into a calmness. I found myself thinking, Duh! That’s how life works. And yet still, there was an element of amazement that I never took for granted. This blend of calm and amazement was so unique to me that I coined the term, Wowduh: a profound state of surprise and appreciation for the synchronicity of life while simultaneously acknowledging its ordinariness and obviousness.

Until that point, it was only in hindsight that I noticed a synchronicity. I wondered if this phenomenon could support me more actively. Could it help me to navigate decisions? I offered a simple prayer to the Universe, “I see your infinite intelligence. Can I play on the same team as you?”

My prayer was answered. It felt as if I had entered into a brilliantly written fantasy movie. There was foreshadowing, carefully placed clues, and precise signposts indicating that I was moving in the right direction. Clear story arcs emerged which echoed the Hero’s Journey and revealed deeper themes shaping my life. Whatever I needed would arrive at the perfect moment. It was uncanny and undeniably magical.

This became especially clear during a major career transition. Before beginning my psychotherapy training, I was working as a photographer. I was unsure whether or not to step away from that work as I entered a new profession. Instead of spiralling into stressful deliberation, I trusted synchronicity to guide me. Well, it turned out that my photography website expired on the very same day that I would see my first psychotherapy client. Wowduh! The Universe had spoken. My chapter as a photographer had ended and a new one had begun. From that point, there was no second-guessing. My decision felt right and was validated by synchronicity.

This is simply one example among thousands. Many others carry layers of backstory and context that would be difficult to capture in a brief article.

Thus far, I’ve found that synchronicity isn’t just a simple party trick. It’s also not meant to astonish us into a state of overwhelm, confusion, or fear. With calm, expanded, and yet grounded awareness, synchronicity can be a practical tool for navigating life without overthinking.

Synchronicity can feel magical enough for a wow! And obvious enough for a duh! In this wowduh state, our collaboration with the Universe can flow with ease.
