It was the summer of 1981. My friends Jim, Ron, Kevin, and myself were driving home from a movie. On a whim, I decided to play a joke on Kevin. “Hey Kevin, guess what?” I said.
“What?” he asked.
“Jim’s dog died,” I said, trying to keep a straight face. Kevin looked shocked and turned to Jim for confirmation. To my surprise, Jim played along.
“Yeah, it’s true,” Jim said, pretending to be upset.
The next day, Jim called me. “Hey, dude. You won’t believe this, but my dog actually died last night,” he said.
I laughed nervously. “You’re kidding, right?”
“No, I’m serious,” he said. “Can you come help me bury him?”
Amazed at the coincidence, I went to Jim’s house and helped my friend lay his poor dog to rest.
