Mother’s Intuition Saves a Baby’s Life

Daisy Garcia

It was a Saturday evening, and my family gathered at my niece Stella’s new home for a housewarming celebration. I was planning to arrive the following day, but my relatives celebrated late into the night with dinner and music. Among them was my sister Carmen’s granddaughter, Susie, a two-year-old who had been on medicine for an ear infection.

As the night wore on, my mom grew increasingly uneasy. “It’s almost midnight!” she said repeatedly. “We need to get to bed!” She urged everyone to wind down, and at midnight, they started preparing for sleep.

At that moment, Susie’s mom went to check on her in the guest room. To her horror, she found the baby face down, her skin blue, with vomit on her face, not breathing, and no pulse—unconscious! She screamed for help, and Carmen immediately rushed into the room. Without hesitation, she began CPR—breathing into the baby’s mouth and nose, performing chest compressions, all while shouting for someone to call 911.

The ambulance arrived quickly, but by the time they reached the house, Susie had started breathing again and was awake. She was taken to the hospital for evaluation, where they suspected a febrile seizure. Thankfully, she was discharged later that morning, healthy and safe.

Looking back, it’s hard to ignore the role my mom’s intuition played. She later told us she had felt a strong, anxious sense that something would happen at midnight. Thanks to her timely concern and Carmen’s quick action—Carmen being certified in CPR—the baby survived. This experience felt like more than just a coincidence. It was as if everything aligned just in time.
