During my MSc in Transpersonal Psychology with Alef Trust, I hit a wall. I had to choose my final-year dissertation topic—and I had no idea what to study. So I joined a webinar where the supervisors pitched their research areas.
That’s where I first heard Bethany Butzer mention synchronicity. Honestly, at the time I had little knowledge of it and zero interest.
Then another student asked Bethany about a completely unrelated topic: “heart-opening.” I internally scoffed. Too vague. Too fluffy. I closed my laptop.
The next morning, I was scrolling YouTube in bed when the very first video served to me was titled “Synchronicity Explained.” I hadn’t searched for it. I clicked.
Halfway through, I froze. A chapter title appeared on the screen: “Heart-opening.”
I literally thought, What the hell is this?! Was this just the YouTube algorithm… or something else? I had sat through hundreds of Zoom calls, and YouTube had never mirrored two random words from the day before like that—especially the exact words that had stirred something in me emotionally.
That was the moment I couldn’t unsee it.
I emailed Bethany that morning and said, “I have to study synchronicity with you.”
